Tree Planting
Requesting A City Planted Tree
The City of River Falls is committed to planting and maintaining trees throughout the community. This process takes time and careful planning to ensure that each tree is planted in the right location and receives proper care. If you are interested in a boulevard tree being planted near your property, please contact the City Forester. Trees are planted as resources and scheduling allow, and we will do our best to accommodate your request as soon as possible.
We understand that some residents may prefer to replant a boulevard tree sooner than the City's timeline allows. Homeowners are welcome to plant a tree at their own expense with prior approval.
To do so:
- Choose a species from the City’s Approved Boulevard Tree Planting List (PDF)
- Complete and return the Homeowner Boulevard Tree Planting Form (PDF)
- Wait for approval before planting
RFMU Tree Planting Rebate Program
Planting trees can help shade your home which can reduce your energy bill. River Falls Municipal Utilities (RFMU) offers a rebate of $25-50 for each tree you plant. Simply plant a tree, take a picture, and follow these Application Instructions (PDF).
Tree Planting Do's and Don'ts
Do’s:
- Choose the right site for your tree. Make sure the tree is well suited for the location and avoids utilities, viewshed obstructions, and other conflicts
- Remove all burlap, containers, or wire baskets when planting and ensure there are no circling roots
- Water trees for the first 1-2 years after planting
- Stake tree only if absolutely necessary and remove after one year
Don’ts:
- Use filter fabric around tree as it can impede water and nutrient cycling and negatively impact soil health
- Plant your tree too deep. The root flare should never be buried to prevent rotting and suffocation of roots
- Create mulch volcanos! Make sure much is pulled away from trunk to prevent rot and decay at the trees base
- Fertilize newly planted trees as it can cause stress to young trees
- Store items within the critical root zone because it can compact soil, impede growth, and lead to tree injury
- Prune excessively until new tree is established
