SNOW AND COLD WEATHER TIPS
OUTSIDE
- Remember to shovel around your mailbox and any fire hydrant on your property.
- When shoveling, please include sidewalks in the right-of-way as well as pedestrian curbs/ramps on corner lots. With odd-even parking, snowplows may deposit snow in these areas more than once, so stay vigilant. Please do not shovel snow from your driveway or sidewalk into the streets.
- Please discourage children from building snow forts immediately adjacent to the street. This can be especially dangerous when plows are out.
- During snowstorms, do not place garbage cans in the street or blacktop area in your alley.
- Keep your vehicle’s gas tank at least half-full. Pack an emergency kit with items such as food, water, extra blankets and warm clothing, booster cables, and a cell phone charger.
- Dress for the weather. Wear loose-fitting layers, a hat, gloves and snow boots. Make sure you have a scarf or some other way to cover your face.
- Check on any family members or neighbors who are elderly and/or need assistance.
- Use a roof rake, not a ladder, to alleviate snow and prevent ice buildup on your roof. When it becomes too difficult to remove, you may wish to call a professional. Note: When maneuvering your roof rake, stay clear of overhead power lines.
INSIDE
- Test the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors around your home. If you can’t remember the last time you changed the batteries, replace them.
- Check your furnace to make sure it is working properly. If you rely on heating oil or propane, make sure you have enough to last through the warning period.
- Do not attempt to use gasoline or propane heaters or a grill to heat your home or garage. Those devices produce carbon monoxide, which could be deadly in enclosed areas.
- Don’t close off rooms, especially if there is piping in them; open cabinet doors where pipes are on an exterior wall; and seal off drafts around plumbing.
